Frequently asked questions

What is taken out of my paycheck?

Most workers see federal income tax, Social Security (6.2%), and Medicare (1.45%) withheld. Depending on where you live, state income tax, state disability or paid leave insurance, and local income tax may also come out. Pre-tax deductions like 401(k) contributions and health insurance premiums reduce your taxable pay.

How is take-home pay calculated?

Start with gross pay, subtract pre-tax deductions, then subtract federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and any state and local taxes. This calculator estimates your full-year tax with 2026 rates and divides it by your number of paychecks.

Which states have no income tax on wages?

Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming do not tax wages.

Why is my actual paycheck different?

Withholding depends on your Form W-4, bonuses, other jobs, and employer benefits. Treat this as an estimate and compare it with your pay stub.
