Salary and Hourly Pay Converter
Updated for 2026 Tax data reviewed 2026-09-16. Sources and methodology
What does your pay rate actually mean for each paycheck? Convert hourly wages to annual salary, or an annual salary into hourly, weekly, biweekly, semimonthly, and monthly pay. Then choose your state and tax details to estimate how much reaches your bank account.
The basic conversion is simple. Your actual paycheck is more personal: hours worked, pay schedule, federal withholding, state and local taxes, benefits, and retirement contributions all change take-home pay.

Results use 2026 federal and state tax rules. They are estimates, not tax advice.
How the conversion works
For a standard full-time schedule of 40 hours a week and 52 weeks a year:
Annual salary = hourly rate × 2,080 hours
That shortcut assumes you are paid for all 52 weeks. Fewer hours, unpaid time off, overtime, bonuses, or an irregular schedule all change the annual total.
| Pay schedule | Paychecks per year | Gross pay per check |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly | 52 | Annual salary ÷ 52 |
| Biweekly | 26 | Annual salary ÷ 26 |
| Semimonthly | 24 | Annual salary ÷ 24 |
| Monthly | 12 | Annual salary ÷ 12 |
Biweekly and semimonthly are not the same. Biweekly workers are paid every two weeks and usually get three paychecks in two months of the year. Semimonthly workers are paid twice each month.
Gross pay versus take-home pay
Gross pay is what you earn before anything is withheld. Take-home pay, also called net pay, is what remains after payroll taxes and other deductions. Common reductions include:
- Federal income tax withholding
- Social Security tax, often labeled OASDI (see What is OASDI on my paycheck?)
- Medicare tax
- State or local income tax
- State disability or paid leave contributions where they apply
- Health insurance premiums and retirement contributions
- Other voluntary or court-ordered deductions
Two people earning the same salary can receive different paychecks because their states, W-4 elections, benefits, and deductions differ.
